The Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) Annual Update
8:45 AM - 9:15 AMFull Abstract
The Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) Annual Update
In 2018 - 2019 the SUNY Library community has been involved in several large scale projects that have broad implications on your campuses. This session will focus on the state of our current projects and provide high level snapshot of what the projects for 2019 - 2020.
New Library Services Platform: The new shared library services platform is the first time as a system we have deployed an enterprise level technology solution, where all our campuses will go live, on the same instance, at the same time. In order to support this new platform we have developed the SUNY Shared Library Services, that will be housed at Empire State College.
Open Access Policy: In 2018 the SUNY Board of Trustees passed a resolution, requiring all state operated, SUNY campuses to pass an Open Access policy by March, 2020. In the last year, OLIS has been working with campuses in helping to answer policy related questions, while also developing a repository solution that is designed to support campus’ policies. The New Library Services Platform, will provide a solution for discovering content in the new SUNY open access repository..
SUNY OER Services: In the last several years SUNY has become an international leader with their Open Educational Resources (OER) efforts. Nearly all our campuses have been involved in helping our faculty understand the benefits of OER and the SUNY OER Services have been leading these education efforts, while also providing curated, OER courseware through our partners Lumen Learning and OLI. In the next year we will looking to take full advantage of the open access repository so that we may begin to develop a solution to for our faculty to house the OER they are developing on their campuses.
The SUNY Libraries Consortium: The SLC is entering its third year in existence and are currently in negotiations with the publisher Elsevier. The negotiations are typically a tense time for SUNY libraries. This time out, the SLC has been communicating directly with the UFS and our campus faculty to make them aware of the negotiations and to receive guidance and direction from our faculty researchers, through a series of town halls that took place in the spring. The Open Access Policy is adding a new dimension in these discussions.
