Emerging Technologies: Bridging the Gap between College and Career (#EmTechMOOC)
9:30 AM - 10:00 AMFull Abstract
Exploring Emerging Technologies for Lifelong Learning and Success (#EmTechMOOC) [ http://suny.edu/EmTech ] brings together both learners and instructors in an online community. It is an open-access resource targeted to the lifelong learning needs of faculty, staff, students, and anyone from across the globe who has a desire to keep pace with technology change. Participants work through Discovery Exercises at their own pace in order to explore emerging technologies within teaching and learning.
*Faculty* can explore freely-available tools to build learning activities into their courses to help their students master 21st-century skills: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. *Students* explore technology resources to support their learning and complete course assignments. *Everyone* from across the globe is also welcome to participate to enhance their personal and professional growth.
EmTech is an effective professional development opportunity to learn about emerging technologies. Participants learn about using audio, video, ePortfolios, gamification, simulations, and other technology tools. They also post reflections about their explorations and reply to colleagues’ posts to build a robust learning community.
This project consists of two associated parts; #EmTechMOOC and EmTechWIKI. #EmTechMOOC is a Massive Open Online Course, which runs every 5 weeks through the Coursera platform. The MOOC provides a supportive environment for dialogue and sharing among participants. EmTechWIKI is a socially-curated discovery engine to discover tools, tutorials, and resources. The WIKI can be used as a stand-alone resource, or it can be used together with #EmTechMOOC.
A challenge has been to determine how to integrate EmTech into the diverse institutions found within SUNY. This panel session will demonstrate how several campuses use EmTech and how their faculty and staff have benefited from the experience. Faculty from several different SUNY institutions will share how they have encouraged their campus communities to become involved in EmTech, and they will highlight some of the successes as a result of their involvement.
Learn how your campus can take advantage of this project to benefit students and faculty. Information will be shared about how EmTechWIKI resources may be adapted to supplement teaching and learning needs at your campus. Participants also earn digital badges and build an ePortfolio as a culminating project activity. Free Coursera Certification is also available to everyone within SUNY. We will share what we’ve learned through this process and the changes we’ve made to continue to improve this flexible and adaptive learning opportunity.
