Fake News Apps: How Viable is Automatic Detection?
9:30 AM - 10:00 AMFull Abstract
How do automatic fake news detection tools work and what is their future? Should educators and librarians emphasize these apps in information/media literacy instruction? Recognizing that no app can replace critical thinking or media literacy, what additional strategies can we employ to stop the spread of false information? This presentation is a primer on the latest technology behind fake news detection and will critically examine the advantages and drawbacks of automatic apps such as B.S. Detector, Factmata, Project FiB, CheckThis and others.
