Creating a Campus Program to Recognize Faculty’s Professional Development

8:45 AM - 9:15 AM

Full Abstract

This session will examine a partnership between a technology learning center and a faculty center to document and recognize the commitment of faculty on campus to professional development and growth. The program, now in pilot phase, is known as Professional Recognition of Excellence (PROE). The program framework developed builds on key components of an academic commitment to students and reflects the professional career arc on campus. The seven proficiency levels are a series of categories, using the ISTE standards as a starting point, that reflect active participation and leadership and are aimed at both documenting and fostering a culture of life-long learning and continuous professional improvement at SUNY Oneonta. All participating faculty begin at the novice level and then move through the three tiers of completion (Explorer, Innovator, and Leader) toward mastery level in one of the framework categories of their choice.

The goal for participants in this voluntary recognition program is to recognize publicly the individual's commitment to continued growth and professional development service and leadership on campus. The program also provides a framework for The Faculty Center and the Technology Learning and Teaching Center to consider when planning academic year programming. Management of this program is conducted through an already existing online campus resource repurposed to connect events to participation. This system helps manage the event creation, attendance, completion of any task associated prior to receiving credit, and allows faculty to monitor their progress toward completion of a level.

Benefits of this program include participants becoming a recognized resource for the academic community on campus as they move to the leader level. This system encourages participants to contribute to a culture of collaboration, and a community of practice. It also encourages participants to seek continuous improvement and learning.

Presenters will share the process for development and approval of the pilot, discuss the structure of the framework, and faculty reception to the current pilot. Presenters will also share troubleshooting areas discovered throughout the process.
