Digital Interactive Notebooks for Learning Asynchronously

9:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Full Abstract

This presentation will explore the use of OneNote Class Notebook as a virtual interactive notebook in a fully asynchronous graduate literacy course for pre- and in-service teachers. Interactive Notebooks are a strategy to gauge classroom participation where individuals respond to instructor-provided prompts in their physical notebooks. Applying this strategy to digital coursework allows students to have a portfolio of growth available with them after the semester ends. OneNote Class Notebook is included with all Office 365 subscriptions and allows the professor to set up a Class Notebook without IT involvement. Students can use either the web-based or desktop/mobile application to read and respond to Interactive Notebook prompts. This session will share the pedagogical basis for an interactive notebook, examples of interactive notebook prompts (INPs), and suggestions for streamlining review and grading processes. Participants will leave the session with the knowledge and skills for deploying OneNote Class Notebook in their own environment. OneNote will be explicitly compared with Google Drive, Blackboard assignments, and Blackboard journals.
