Introduction - Architecture, product and system design innovators have utilized design thinking practices since 1950. Syracuse University’s D.School formalized this universal design system and have coined and demonstrated how effective the system is applied to anything that involves end-users. IDEO, a global successful consultancy business has demonstrated success since 1991 applying design thinking to all aspects of their business.

Today, educators and administrators are viewing students as unique end-users who have needs and the desire to learn, improve their economic future or seek a profession that is a rewarding experience.

Educational institutions are missing opportunities when not applying user-centered practices parallel to student-centered learning. Design Thinking practices applied to education can support the multifaceted endeavors educators and administrators are challenged with in the 21st century. Whether it is to revise a program, redesign UX/UI for effective online curriculum dashboards, improve student services such as online communication apps, assist in the redesign of instructional technologies and most importantly transform classroom dynamics so that learning is measurable and retention is successful. Design thinking is that tool, a guide, a roadmap to explore and apply to all educational practices as other design manufacturers and government systems have adopted.

Demonstration – Demonstrate how DESIGN THINKING five phases are applied to product design and how effective these notable phases can be applied to teaching of any subject (STEM courses will be demonstrated as an example). The development phases for product design and education practices are faced with similar challenges; context analysis, problem finding, framing, ideation, finding solutions, creative thinking, use of tactile apparatuses such as drawing, writing, model making, prototyping, testing and peer evaluation. Along with a case study demonstration on how design thinking practices can effectively improve UX/UI elements in the development of online curriculum course design and dashboard interfaces.

Discussion – After the speaker presents the unique phases of design thinking the presentation will solicit Q&A from attendees on how it can be applied to teaching and administrative purposes.
