Summer Refresh: MCC's Summer Workshop Series
2:00 PM - 2:30 PMFull Abstract
Over the past 4 years, the Virtual Campus Team at Monroe Community College has been working alongside their teaching faculty to refresh their online courses using the OSCQR rubric. Traditionally, this is done on a course by course basis using the instructional design team approach, where a team consisting of the faculty member, an instructional designer, a multi-media specialist, and an librarian come together to refresh the course. In an attempt to refresh more courses in a shorter amount of time, the Virtual Campus Team developed and offered the Summer Institute in the summers of 2017 and 2018.
The Summer Institute consists of a series of four separate 3-hour face to face workshops:
Workshop #1: Introduction to OSCQR
Workshop #2: ADA Compliance / Virtual Campus Online Course Template
Workshop #3: Tools You Can Use
Workshop #4: Course Wrap-Up & Sharing
The workshops themselves include presentations, discussions, and hands-on applications focused on updating and refreshing the online courses. Participants come with the goal of improving the navigation, accessibility, and level of engagement of their courses. The Summer Institute is the perfect opportunity to make these changes.
This format of the Summer Institute allows the Virtual Campus team to reach more faculty members and more online courses by working with a room full of faculty members to refresh their courses instead of working separately with each one. Additionally, the faculty members benefit from interacting with each other during the course refresh process, whereas with the traditional course refresh process they are only interacting with the other members of the instructional design team. Some of the participants' favorite moments of the Summer Institute have included their conversations and collaborations with their colleagues.
During this presentation you will hear what we had to offer for both our first Summer Institute in 2017 as well as our second one in 2018. You will also hear about the changes we made, what we learned, and what we plan to do differently in 2019.
