Taking OER Offline
9:30 AM - 10:00 AMFull Abstract
Open Educational Resources (OER) have become an important academic resource, but they are usually unavailable in areas of the world where the internet is lacking or expensive. Kiwix and Kolibri/KA–Lite software provide user–friendly versions of offline content such as Khan Academy videos, textbooks, Wikipedia, Open Street Map and other OER. Nonprofit organizations such as Internet in a–Box and Wiki Project Med then place these OER onto an affordable Raspberry Pi computer to create a local wi-fi server in a classroom, library or clinic. Users have full access to a wide range of open reference materials and OER, which can bring about an educational revolution in schools that traditionally had few resources. Some groups, such as WikiFundi, allow the students themselves to contribute content to the OER, leading to improved local content and high–level learning. The presentation will include a live demonstration of the local wi–fi access using an Internet-in a Box system.
