Microlearning and Other Alternative Professional Development Methods
1:15 PM - 1:45 PMFull Abstract
The term ‘microlearning’ has been associated with corporate training more often than with higher education. Learning in bite-sized chunks seems to be effective when companies train their employees on a new piece of technology, on safety regulations, and other topics that might be divided into smaller units and need just-in-time revisiting. Can microlearning be an effective strategy in higher education faculty development when the traditional faculty development is delivered using ‘macro’ methods such as workshops and webinars?
In this presentation, we examine the feasibility of microlearning and other alternative delivery methods in the context of professional development in higher education. The participants will be introduced to the concept of microlearning, how it differs from micro resources, how microlearning can be utilized in faculty development, and concrete examples of professional development units. Other alternative methods (e.g., spaced learning, learning campaign) will be discussed.
