COIL-Collaborative Online International Learning- A Fulbright Experience for Digital Citizenship and Intercultural Maturity
11:15 AM - 11:45 AMFull Abstract
This presentation discusses COIL (Collaborative On-line International Learning) as an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach at the higher education curriculum and its possibilities in K-12th. The effectiveness of COIL in developing Intercultural Maturity, Interactive Communication, and Digital Citizenship, among students and instructors involved in the partnership, is addressed. The COIL project was funded by the Fulbright award 2018-19 seeking to strengthen the educational relationship between the United States and Colombia. During a semester in Cali-Colombia, the Fulbright awardee disseminated this TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) methodology among K-12th teachers and university professors who engaged in the design of COIL modules; some COIL partners were able to conduct their modules in the spring semester and others will be implementing them in the fall 2019 term. This methodology takes the students out of the classroom virtually to connect with other students, of similar ages, in an authentic interaction focusing on content agreed previously by the faculty partners. Students from different countries complete assignments in collaboration and institutions participating seek to infuse internationalization practices that provide its students with functional skills in the languages of study and knowledge of global issues. The development of intercultural competence, digital citizenship, and interactive communication is examined through class and forum discussions among educators who participated in COIL trainings supported by Universidad del Valle, SUNY-Oneonta, and the Fulbright Scholars Award. This presentation sheds light on the discovery of the COIL experiences that allowed students to understand global issues and negotiate cultural differences while using the target language. Attendees will be able to recognize most common topics that students authentically engage in conversation with their international partners at various levels of language proficiency. Examples of COIL students’ “kinds of talks” (social, planning, language) occurring during interactions are presented. These enhance interactive communication in familiar and some unfamiliar contexts leading to complex situations to ensure a shared understanding of culture. Lastly, the development of intercultural maturity through the COIL activity is presented anticipating challenges leading to judgement, contextualization of language, and making appropriate cultural references when interacting with others from the target culture in social and professional situations.
