Web Presence in the Physical World: Using Applied Learning For More Engaging Online Courses
1:45 PM - 2:15 PMFull Abstract
When High Impact Practices use the see it, hear it, smell it and touch it model, students tend to have a deeper experience. How can we square that with the convenience and accessibility of screen-based learning?
Courses that are 100% online can lead to a disconnect for students. The student of tomorrow will be better served when we design courses that supplement their screen research with the physical world that surrounds them.
Professor Nixon will walk participants through teaching models that connect technology to applied learning. He will site from his courses that use online, cloud-based experiences grounded in the real world.
Some of his examples include: having students participate in treasure hunts that take them throughout the county, capturing audio and images of nearby locations and visiting home centers, furniture and or hardware stores in search of representations of specific design styles.
The presentation leaves participants with fresh ideas on how real-world tasks and assignments can compliment online courses so student motivation is enhanced through engagement that leads to relevant and authentic learning.
