Math Pathways: Why Advise Quantway?

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Full Abstract

Globally students come to post-secondary institutions academically unprepared in mathematics. According to Carnegie/West Ed Math Pathways, 60% of the 1.7 million first time students that enter community college each year will be placed into one or more developmental mathematics course. 80% of them do not complete college-level mathematics within 3 years. Non-completion of developmental mathematics is defeating to students. This often stops students from completing a degree/certificate.

In 2009, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching decided to tackle this issue. They developed a course called, Quantway Core to address the remedial issue. The pedagogy of Quantway has proven to be successful and has opened doors to students that otherwise would have been closed to them. Students who have taken Quantway Core have done better then students who have taken the traditional remediation route in half the time. Quantway core teaches mathematics through a innovative approach utilizing quantitative reasoning, growth mindset and productive persistence.

Six Core Principles were identified in a joint statement by Achieving the Dream and other agencies in 2012. Principle One states, "Every student's post secondary education begins with an intake process to choose an academic direction and identify the support needed to pass relevant credit-bearing gateway courses in the first year." This process can help influence a student's mindset to succeed in their first year and beyond. Advising Quantway core can be instrumental in a student's success from the first time they walk into an advisement appointment. This course allows administration, teaching faculty and advisers to come together to help ensure student success.

This presentation will discuss Quantway and it's pedagogy. It will discuss advising Quantway and why it is important for student success and retention. It will also discuss using a growth mindset approach to advising.

Participants should gain a understanding of Quantway and it's purpose. They will also gain a knowledge of the importance of advising the course. The participants will have gained knowledge how to apply practical skills in the advisement session to assist students to grow their self confidence in their academic abilities, especially as it relates to mathematics.
