SAIL into the future of SUNY and beyond: Investing in our students, ourselves, and our work

4:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Full Abstract

In today’s world, it’s crucial to exercise self-reflection, critical thinking, cultural intelligence, and overall relationship-building skills to help reach our own professional and personal goals. Students are not only asking, but expecting that we invest in them and their growth. When we invest in all of our stakeholders in our system, we provide a more positive organizational culture.

The SUNY Strategic, Academic, Innovative, Leadership (SAIL) Institute provides leadership and development training programs for faculty, staff, and students and beyond. One of SUNY SAIL’s signature student programs is the SUNY Global Leader Experience. Every year, SUNY students from across the system come together in an intensive four-day experiential student leadership training to meet with leaders from different organizations throughout the host city to help solve a global challenge within that city. Through campus partnerships, these programs are able to be offered to students from very different backgrounds and identities. These partnerships are key in helping to decrease the equity gap to participate in programs such as these.

In this session, you will learn about the SUNY SAIL Institute, its offerings, and specifically the SUNY Global Leader Experience. You will hear from SUNY SAIL, SUNY SAIL’s partner Common Purpose, an organization based out of the UK that creates the content for this particular global leadership program as well as feedback from former graduates of SUNY SAIL's most recent Global Leader Experience where over nine SUNY campuses were represented.

Through this presentation, you will get an opportunity to:
• See the finished products of the student work accomplished in this project-based learning model
• Learn how to get involved in this work
• Discuss how to market to and keep connected with the students that attend these programs
• Give feedback on what you would like to see offered to your campus and system
• Provide leadership topic ideas that you think are critical for students and other stakeholders on your campus to explore
• Discuss ways to provide more of these outstanding experiences to underrepresented students
