Applied Learning through Innovative Partnerships on Campus and throughout the Community: Creation of a Successful Disaster.
12:30 PM - 1:45 PMFull Abstract
A panel of committee members will share valuable insight on their roles in this innovative and collaborative applied learning event.
The SUNY Broome Mock Disaster event is a hands-on practical experience for students in their field of study, and a practical observation experience for students who observe the event. Students gain valuable insight into operational aspects of their field of study, and are able to critically analyze their actions and participation level through feedback and the use of media, as the event is closely monitored by faculty and documented by video recording. The event is also analyzed by use of pre and post student surveys.
This event is a campus-wide initiative involving collaboration and team work from numerous departments across campus, to include Medical Assisting, Criminal Justice & Emergency Services, Nursing, Health Information Technology, Radiologic Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Clinical Laboratory Technologies, Marketing & Communication, Hospitality Programs, Chemistry, Communications & Media Arts, and Public Safety, and involves approximately 350 participants. Members of the community who participate in the event include Chenango Fire, Broome County Health Department, Tioga County Health Department, and the Broome County Hazmat Team.
To make this event successful, over 30 committee members begin planning and preparation at the start of each fall semester for the event, which is held at the end of the spring semester.
