A Team Approach to Program Progression and Success: Coaching and Counseling for Nursing Students at SUNY Broome Community College

Full Abstract

New students can find the nursing program to be particularly challenging due to the emphasis on examinations and application/analysis level examination items. Community college students are often juggling multiple priorities in addition to school, including employment and family obligations. Often, mental health issues, either existing or new, can further complicate success in the program. Nursing students have a proscribed academic plan. We utilize the Starfish platform to document referrals and communicate. However, we are a small enough campus that we frequently attend the same meetings and can easily walk a student to the needed service as necessary. It was evident that students were not always aware of nor likely to utilize the existing support services. A plan was developed to integrate academic coaching and mental health services into orientation and offer group sessions for coaching and to discuss mental health issues. Referrals to the academic coaches are embedded into Starfish. Student progress is reported to the chair at 5 weeks, 7 weeks, 10 weeks, and as needed. There is a standardized list of referrals that are offered when students are identified as being at risk, which begins with academic coaching, but also includes the accessibility resources office, tutoring, and mental health services. Mental health services have been determined to be especially salient, as more and more students struggle with test-taking anxiety. We collect self-report data from students regarding usage of these services as well as process data. This session will focus on how the need was identified, how the services are utilized, how we collaborate to the benefit of the student, and on-going student feedback.
