Maximizing Online Tools to Demonstrate Student Success in Applied Learning
10:30 AM - 11:45 AMFull Abstract
Experiential Learning is one component of the Career Center’s and Division of Information Technology mission to educate students about the impact of experiences on career development processes and preparing students for employment or graduate study. Stony Brook’s vision of successful student experience is to be a higher education leader in creating high-impact, transformative work experiences that prepare students for meaningful and productive careers. Through fostering a professional environment with academic and administrative departments, we work together to use online tools and platforms to reach a wider student population.
Stony Brook is excited to share several initiatives and programs on connecting applied learning to pre-professional readiness. We expanded a cohort of students with a long list of job-ready skills and eight career competencies (NACE practices). The primary objective was to improve students' confidence in their ability to articulate their skills in front of employers and be truly ready for a future career including participation in Online Career Readiness Platform/CareerSpots - https://www.careerspots.com/ and obtaining digital credentials in form of career readiness micro credentials. In addition, we developed skill-based webinars and online training for student employees, interns and best practices trainings through technology like Transferable Skills, Customer Service, Receiving Feedback, Email Etiquette so students can master skills employers want and be career ready.
Stony Brook University capitalized on internal resources to effectively collect student learning outcomes in applied and experiential learning by using Handshake platform, Qualtrics and online, onsite, and mobile methods. We implemented best ways to effectively communicate student engagement in experiential learning by creating a series of videos/stories and marketing them to on/off campus stakeholders: Student Experiential Highlights https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/career-center/undergraduate/jobexperience#view-studentexperientialhighlights.
We will be sharing examples on building capacity for faculty, staff and students through execution of virtual career appointments, employers virtual information sessions, alumni virtual connection with undergraduate and graduate students and effective partnerships with industry. We'll emphasize Stony Brook University’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, Division of Information Technology and how they use technology to build capacity for faculty, student and staff including Data Management Tool, Echo360 Learning Capture and more.
