Meeting Expanding Student Needs in Fiscally-Challenging Times: A Partnership Approach

1:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Full Abstract

While enrollment has declined and revenue has receded at most community colleges over the past several years, the need for student services inside and outside the classroom has increased considerably. To meet this crucial demand to ensure student success, Monroe Community College Student Services division has partnered with the institution's Foundation to obtain significant funds from external sources. These funds are being used to address a number of non-academic student needs, including food, housing, and transportation insecurities.

This presentation will be guided by two associate vice presidents from the division and the executive director of the college's Foundation.

The format for the presentation will include the following:
I. Data demonstrating the challenge to meet the financial demands of student support with declining enrollments.
II. Identifying major areas of need for student success.
III. Steps to forge a partnership between student services and the foundation to elicit external funding.
IV. Through partnership, determining high-impact initiatives and infrastructure to support the effort.
V. Identify potential donors and utilize partnership to solicit funds.
VI. Secure funding and use accordingly.
VII. Monitor and assess impact of initiatives.
VIII. Enhance partnership and seek additional funding opportunities.

The presentation will include an overview of a $3 million grant from the Wegmans Family Foundation.

This presentation will not only discuss a model of funding from external sources, but it will also highlight that important initiatives such as addressing insecurities can be funded from donors.
