Expanding Undergraduate Research to Promote Student Success at the University at Albany’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE)

Full Abstract

The University at Albany’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE), created at the start of the 2018-2019 academic year, allies its principle objectives and services with the institutional priorities of the University’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan. CURCE’s activities contribute directly to advancing UAlbany’s institutional priorities in the areas of Student Success and Research Excellence. Undergraduate research is recognized within the SUNY system, and nationally, as a high-impact educational practice that significantly contributes to student academic and professional success. This presentation will explore and discuss the programs and initiatives that CURCE has developed to draw increasing numbers of undergraduates in mentored undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative works. We will also discuss some recent advances in supporting faculty mentors (and would be mentors) by showcasing dedicated individual faculty and departmental programs and highlighting multiple pathways to efficient and rewarding mentorship.
