Connecting Infrastructure and Effective Pedagogy in Applied Learning for Student Success
12:30 PM - 1:45 PMFull Abstract
FLCC has many curricular opportunities for students to participate in Applied Learning from required internships to Nursing clinical practicum. FLCC’s Human Services A.S. program requires students to complete two internships for graduation. Program faculty and staff have successfully built a robust infrastructure to enhance student pre-professional readiness through preparation and training for the internship experience. In addition a multi-modal learning environment that includes synchronous classrooms across campus centers located in different geographic areas provides students with fundamental communication skills; a learning outcome highly valued by employers. FLCC’s Environmental Conservation Department has long included some of the College’s signature programs of study. The faculty have infused the curriculum with a pedagogy deeply tied to Applied Learning; infusing it in nearly every offered course. They are committed to thinking outside the box for key components of Applied Learning best practice such as connecting reflection to scientific writing and have created robust real world experiences for students directly connected to the stewardship of ecosystems and wildlife in the Finger Lakes region. The panel will unpack how the two departments use these different strategies in Applied Learning to promote student success.
