Structured Learning: Engagement & Success through Enrollment in a Mandatory Recitation
2:45 PM - 3:15 PMFull Abstract
With a trend of declining academic skills for incoming freshmen and at-risk students, “Structured Learning” was developed. This co-requisite course provides academic hard and soft skill development strategies including recitation for the linked course content. It is co-taught by a content expert (generally the linked course faculty) and a representative from the Student Success Center as a noncredit pass/fail course is in an effort to provide content and application support throughout the process. Through the first three semester of this program implementation, we have learned that this co-requisite format is best implemented with significant collaboration between the Student Success Center and the instructor of the targeted course to ensure the needs of the students are efficiently addressed rather than generally applied to all populations. Alfred State has targeted this intensive support to gateway courses, courses with a high D/F/W rate, and courses with high at-risk population enrollment, with results and analysis showing a correlation between consistent participation/attendance in Structured Learning and overall college success as well as improved persistence for at-risk students. Alfred State has found a way to make mandatory intervention work!
