How The Academic Exploration Program has improved persistence and success with undeclared students at SUNY Delhi
10:30 AM - 11:00 AMFull Abstract
SUNY Delhi’s Academic Exploration Program (AEP) was designed to provide immediate, structured advisement from the point of acceptance with early support for students’ academic decision-making and career planning. Using Vincent Tinto’s theory of student persistence and departure as its conceptual framework, this project was intended to provide exploring students with vital information and enhanced personal contact with experienced master advisors.
All students are required to take a Student Success three credit course in their first semester. This course was designed to assist students in acquiring the necessary soft skills to be successful in college including: time management; reading, writing and study skills; financial literacy; and stress relief. The students are also exposed to the various academic areas at the college through guest speakers and visiting different areas across campus.
This workshop will review the successes, inherent challenges, and lessons learned over the past three years.
