Co-Curricular High Impact Practices: Programs that Support Learning, Engagement, Retention and Satisfaction

12:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Full Abstract

SUNY College at Brockport's strategic plan outlines a goal to "ensure that all undergraduate students, including transfer students and non-traditional students, have the opportunity to undertake multiple HIPs and CHIPs and have these experiences identified on their academic and co-curricular transcripts." The Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs have 10 co-curricular high impact practices that mirror the AAC&U High Impact Practices, with a focus on metrics related to engagement, satisfaction, learning and retention. This presentation will highlight three of the co-curricular high impact practices that were evaluated over the past two years, and yielded positive results related to student success:
-Living Learning Communities
-Leadership Development Program
-Club Sports

Attached is a powerpoint that includes recently presented data to provide context and data for the proposal reviewers.

The panelists will discuss their particular area of co-curricular high impact practice, the assessment process and results. We expect this presentation to be engaging and generate a discussion about broadening the student affairs agenda to support student success in strategic and measurable ways.

Discussions at this session will focus on co-curricular programs, their impact on sense of belonging, student engagement, learning and peer development. These programs are significant elements of a student affairs agenda that influence campus climate, retention and persistence. As student affairs professionals, we have a responsibility to ensure that all of our students can fully engage in purposeful, accessible educational activities within and outside the classroom. This panel discussion will highlight a broad strategy and three successful programs within that strategy.
