Applied Learning and Identity Politics: Integrating Equity in Experiential Education
Full Abstract
This session will delve into critical analysis to deconstruct discourses of identities that limit access to applied learning opportunities and careers. We will examine current research on the implications of intersectional identities when experiencing barriers during exposure to new communities, organizations, and workplace settings. Participants will discuss strategies to support diverse students to claim their identity throughout their applied learning experience and address the growing concern of discrimination and bias students may face during an internship or work experience. To ensure applied learning programs and services are high-impact focused, participants will be provided alternative assessment methods and will discuss critical questions on identity, power, and privilege and the influence on careers. The presenter will tie in research from her experience teaching Women and Gender Studies in various institutions coupled with her experience in Career Services, providing an analysis of how social discourses plays a role in the accessibility of applied learning opportunities. This is not your average diversity training seminar.
Attendees will leave with resources, a diversity toolkit, and best practices on supporting students who experience systemic barriers. Participants will learn how to identify and challenge forms of discrimination.
