"When Did You Lose Your Name?" Challenging the notion of what it means to be "at risk".

Full Abstract

A challenge that we face in the field of advising is that we use “at-risk” to be synonymous or code for “academically underprepared, low income and underrepresented”. In doing so, we have ignored the intersections of “at-risk” students’ identities. Further, we have limited the scope for “at-risk” to focus solely on the student, as opposed to seeing the institution as “at risk” of losing the student. The discussion surrounding “at-risk” students stresses a deficit model- focusing on perceived weaknesses, which prevent advisors and institutions from seeing students’ strengths, passions, and interests. By breaking down the limitations of the phrase “at-risk”, we are able to have a more holistic view that includes students that are academically underprepared and or academically struggling, as well as those that are excelling academically.
This presentation will focus on how to build trust and authentic relationships between advisors and students. By using theories of intersectionality, appreciative advising and asset model as our foundation, we will be deep witnesses to students’ journey of self-discovery. Through case studies, we will identify best practices for working with different types of students “at-risk” to ensure their retention and ultimate graduation. Participants will leave with hands on strategies to take back their institutions. Furthermore, participants will be able to share their own experiences working with students “at-risk”.
