Applied Learning on Campus—A Win-win for Everyone
2:45 PM - 3:15 PMFull Abstract
Applied/Service Learning is credit-bearing teaching and learning that integrates meaningful community service to a non-profit organization using curriculum-based learning. Although it does meet a community need, service learning is not volunteerism as it has explicit learning outcomes with opportunities for reflection.
The benefits of service learning will be discussed:
• Attaches meaning to coursework and increases motivation
• Reduces stereotypes and facilitates cultural and racial understanding
• Develops a sense of social responsibility and citizenship skills
• Increases volunteerism with different organizations after graduation
• Enhances self-awareness and self-confidence in one’s abilities
• Improves soft-skills
The presentation will feature case studies of Applied/Service Learning Projects that we have done at Rockland Community College. We will discuss what Applied/Service Learning is, as well as what it is not. We will outline the process. We will discuss all the vital components of Applied/Service Learning Projects including criteria and client selection, investigation, action, and reflection.
Prof. Roche will discuss her project, “Application of Managerial Functions to Close the Deal” where students worked with “Clothes the Deal,” the on-campus shop offering professional clothing and accessories to students for job interviews. Students applied the functions of managment to improve operation of the shop and to promote its usage.
Prof. MacAvery Kane will discuss a recent project she has done with her Graphic Design class to design a logo for Guided Pathways, a new initiative for the college, where students worked closely with the campus’ Strategic Marketing Department. She will also discuss a recent social awareness project to raise awareness about Suicide Prevention with a Bus campaign for the county that her Graphic Design class worked on with the Rockland County Department of Mental Health.
The presentation will include the discussion of utilizing campus resources that support these initiatives and a reflection and discussion about the benefits to both our students and our college community.
The presentation will conclude with time for questions and discussion. The audience will be provided with hand-outs of best practices for successful Applied Learning Projects.
