Closing the Gap: Building Confidence and Success in Mathematical Performance in Today’s Students

10:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Full Abstract

Looking to close the gap in math preparedness, particularly in applied math courses, SUNY Delhi has piloted various math placement techniques and coupled placement with a number of initiatives to improve student performance in math-intensive courses within their majors.

After identifying several basic mathematical concepts students struggled with, at-risk students were identified and placed in co-requisite classes. Four models were piloted in the 2018-19 academic year with varying levels of success.

Panel members will discuss placement strategies, each of the co-requisite course models and the co-teaching strategies employed. Boosting student confidence, sharing learning strategies and overall increased student success outcomes will be shared along with how the second iteration of the project is developing in the 2019-20 academic year.
