Grants and Proposals

This virtual workshop outlines the components of a successful proposal and the steps to get there. Learn how to improve your chances of getting funded through fund sourcing, proper planning and organization, concise writing, collaboration, and proposal submission. From the comfort of your home or office participate in learning activities, independent grant writing work, and online discussions. 

Target Audience:

Faculty and project staff, grants administration staff, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, grant writers.

Learning Objectives


    At completion of this workshop, all students should be able to:
  • Define the types of funding/potential funding sources
  • Connect to local grant seeking/application resources and entities on our own campus
  • Identify the relevance of project collaborators, while respecting ethical authoring
  • Develop proposal sections
  • Identify steps needed for proposal submission
  • Personalize the grant seeking/application process for your own interests/disciplines

Completion Requirements

The workshop is asynchronous, scheduled over twelve (12) weeks. During this time, you will be reading the text, posting to online discussions, and exploring additional resources. Over the workshop period, you will be compiling chunks of your own grant proposal.

To achieve a completion certificate, you must participate in each weekly online discussion and compile at least a draft grant proposal in an area of interest. You can expect to spend 3 to 5 hours/week in the workshop's activities and your own independent writing.

Meet the Instructors

Kathleen Gradel

Dr. Kathleen Gradel is a Professor in the College of Education at SUNY Fredonia. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in educational psychology, literacy, technology, and action research. She frequently conducts faculty professional development through Fredonia’s Professional Development Center, including co-teaching courses for novice online instructors. Her courseload consists of online and blended formats; these venues give her the option to work with students on their own tech-supported productivity. She also does professional development for Fredonia’s Professional Development Center, and serves on the Center’s Board. She has achieved the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, in recognition of instructional innovation.

Dr. Gradel has been consistently active within the K-12 arena. She has co-directed multiple professional development-focused grant initiatives, in partnership with regional school districts and Fredonia colleagues. Most recently, she has worked with 12 Chautauqua County school districts to launch a menu of blended and online AP (Advanced Placement) courses, offered to regional high schoolers via Erie2 BOCES. She also moderates the WNY Google+ Educator Group. She serves on the Open SUNY Advisory Committee and is one of Fredonia’s FACT2 campus reps.

Julia Devine

Julia Devine is a cultural organizer and creative leader with 20 years of experience in nonprofit development and higher education. She is also a licensed financial advisor with Lomanto Provost Financial Advisors. She is a Lecturer in Theatre and teaches grant writing at SUNY Plattsburgh. Additionally, she works as an independent grant writer and nonprofit consultant. Her clients include local and national nonprofit organizations in education, the arts, healthcare, and the environment. Active in local community development, Julia co-founded Outside Art: Plattsburgh Public Art Project. She also led the former Center for Community Engagement at SUNY Plattsburgh. Her work in cultural development earned a National Arts Strategies Creative Community Fellowship in association with the Kresge Foundation and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice. Julia received her M.F.A. in Theatre from Harvard University.
