AI & Assessment: Beyond the Basics

Description: 

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming integral to education, faculty members face the critical challenge of maintaining academic integrity while implementing effective assessment practices that enhance teaching and learning. This presentation will focus on leveraging AI to support authentic and equitable assessments in alignment with adult learning theory. We will explore how AI can enhance online teaching and learning by providing practical strategies for integrating AI tools that uphold academic integrity, rigor, and fairness. We will examine how principles of adult learning theory can be utilized to enhance assessment practices in an era of AI and focus on leveraging AI to support high-impact assessment strategies that uphold academic integrity, empower students, and model best practices. 

By engaging participants in reflective dialogue, the session aims to encourage educators to consider how strategies can be applied to their own teaching disciplines and assessment methods. Participants will gain actionable strategies for using AI and recognizing its impacts to create transparent, meaningful, and effective assessments that meet the diverse needs of adult learners.

Asynchronous Authentic Assessment in Brightspace: Increasing Integrity and Engagement

Description:  Asynchronous authentic assessments are crucial: they reflect real-world scenarios, adapt to individual schedules, and significantly reduce the likelihood of cheating due to their practical and unique nature. In this session we will look at the theory behind, best practices for, and examples of these assessments, delving into the methodologies, benefits, and integrity of asynchronous authentic assessments in Brightspace and highlighting how they promote honest and meaningful learning experiences and increase student engagement. Participants will brainstorm how to adapt the examples to fit their courses, and will leave with resources for continuous improvement and an opportunity for ongoing networking.

Inclusive Online Learning Environments: Lessons Learned from the DEI4All Project

Description:  This session will provide an overview of the lessons learned and tips and suggestions related to the DEI4All project. Inclusive online teaching practices that have emerged across all the practices will be discussed, as well practices around specific themes including: Building Intentional Connection; Designing and supporting inclusive online engagement; and Cultivating a sense of Belonging. Also included is a demonstration of the free & openly-licensed tool developed by a national cross-institutional collaboration to simultaneously address Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) & online course quality. SUNY, Cal State LA CETL, & 66 other institutions have developed a resource of online inclusive teaching practices that can be used with any of the main online course quality rubrics, i.e., CVC-OEI, OSCQR, QOLT, or QM

    This session will provide participants with: 

    1. An overview of the lessons learned regarding inclusive online teaching.

    2. A demonstration of the annotations and platform.

    3. Access to the platform and the opportunity to consider how to apply an inclusive teaching practice in their own online teaching/course design context. 

    4. An opportunity for participants to brainstorm how they might apply some of the presentation themes and lessons learned from this project into their own online instruction.
