Finding the Sweet Spot: A Classroom Culture of Access
3:45 PM - 5:00 PMFull Abstract
In 2019, SUNY Oswego launched the Faculty Accessibility Fellowship program, designed to involve faculty in our campus-wide accessibility initiative. Seven faculty from all four of Oswego’s schools used the opportunity to explore accessibility, disability, and inclusive pedagogy. In the past year, we have built technological skills foundational to accessibility while also focusing on broader issues of academic ableism. We have sought to discover a sweet spot between technological solutions and universal design principles that make accessibility an achievable goal for faculty. In this session, we will share the framework we have developed to think through our own classroom strategies, introduce practical approaches to developing an accessible classroom culture, and facilitate a conversation about how all faculty can lessen barriers to learning with small, incremental improvements.
