Applying Principles of Universal Design to Support Diverse Learners

1:45 PM - 2:15 PM

Full Abstract

The presenters will share the definition and background information regarding Universal Design (UD) and why UD and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) should be applied to any educational environment to support a diverse population of students. The guidelines and principles of UD will be discussed as well as best practices for UD to address the needs of all students. The presenters will discuss how UDL builds on the principles of UD to address learning-specific needs and will describe the three principles of UDL so that faculty will be able to identify the importance of creating accessible instructional content and electronic resources. Finally, the presenters will share a case example to apply skills and knowledge with a goal of supporting diverse learners, including students with disabilities in their courses.
