Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom

1:15 PM - 2:30 PM

Presentation Description

Join us as we explore the results of our newly piloted online course: Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom. We’ll explore how we designed and developed the course, plans for rolling the course out to a broader audience, and will share data from our pilot participants. This four-week course was designed to build confidence to address challenges, and to communicate effectively with students across difference. It explores strategies for inclusive course design and pedagogical practices that support student engagement. In addition, participants will reflect on their own experiences as learners, teachers, and members of disciplines.

1. Explore a framework for designing and sustaining inclusive learning environments.
2. Explore evidence-based pedagogical strategies to support instructors in all disciplines to promote student engagement.
3. Identify practical strategies that support instructors in building confidence in facilitating and sustaining more inclusive learning environments.
4. Identify strategies for implementing a course or resources at your institution.
5. Formulate an action plan for how to support instructors on your campus.

How will you engage the audience?

Participants in this workshop will be briefly introduced to the new online course, Teaching and Learning in the Diverse Classroom. As a part of this demonstration, attendees will participate in selected course-based reflective writing exercises related to social identity milestones. Next, using a multicultural organization development model, participants will map the current array of programs and resources on their campus to support instructors in creating and sustaining inclusive learning environments. Utilizing a range of active learning exercises (e.g., a gallery walk), small group discussions, and micro-presentations, participants will engage each other in formulating action plans.
