Reflective writing in the science laboratory

9:00 AM - 9:35 AM

Presentation Description

Learning Objectives:
Recognize the learning opportunities in the routine lab notebook.
Explore methods for structured reflective writing.
Identify writing-focused learning outcomes in laboratory courses.

“That student does great in lab, but doesn’t perform well in classes.” Many of our students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, experience this. The science lab is an environment where students work at their own pace and make leaps in understanding, demonstrating strengths that aren’t visible in the traditional classroom. This workshop explores using this inherently individualized experience to help students actualize their abilities. Reflective writing helps students understand they can do science. Through the reflective laboratory writing design, students use intuitive observation skills in a systematic way that will help them succeed in college and jobs. Reflecting on their work, students recognize their ability to troubleshoot, a necessary skill in the classroom.

Structured writing provides the framework to reflect on their process, building insight and awareness of their scientific ability. This hands-on workshop includes examples of gains made through reflective writing in my course. Participants will use a worksheet to identify student learning outcomes in their own courses that are well suited for reflection, and practice reflective writing themselves.
