How contemplative approaches to teaching & learning contribute to faculty development
2:45 PM - 4:00 PMPresentation Description
Contemplative approaches to teaching and learning deepen our academic culture by helping students focus more intently on the subject of their attention, whether this focus be an abstract concept, a poem, a piece of art, or a mathematical formula. These approaches support teachers and students in (1) connecting as whole people with what they are exploring and (2) in fostering deep exploration, inquiry, reflection, and relevant personal application. For the past six and a half years, faculty and staff at SUNY New Paltz have been coming together twice a month during the academic year to explore their common interest in contemplative education and to share how they have attempted to apply these approaches as teachers, helpers and leaders at the college. (3) In this workshop, participants in the Faculty/Staff Contemplative Group will share their efforts to effectively integrate contemplative concepts and practices in their work with students and their interactions with colleagues.
