My Experiences with Gameful Pedagogy and Gradecraft LMS: How I leveraged Gradecraft for learner engagement and autonomy

2:45 PM - 4:00 PM

Presentation Description

By integrating techniques and methods found in well-designed games, gameful pedagogy re-contextualizes the learning environment into one where knowledge is earned and learner autonomy is highlighted. Designed at the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor’s Academic Innovation department, Gradecraft is “the learning management system that helps instructors build gameful courses & encourages students to focus on the craft of learning.” Gradecraft integrates into existing platforms and provides point planners, analytics, rubrics, unlock and gating, badges, leaderboards, and a leveling system. Gameful pedagogy and the Gradecraft LMS answer the chancellor’s call by leveraging innovative software from an external organization that enables individualized classroom experiences while also preparing students for the entrepreneurship skills required for the 21st century. I incorporated Gradecraft into mostly freshmen classrooms at various New York institutions, and I would like to share my experiences, preliminary data, student feedback, and the learning environment of Gradecraft from both the student and teacher perspective.

A 75-minute presentation would allow me to introduce and present preliminary feedback with Gradecraft (10minutes), field initial questions (5minutes), create audience example assignments (20minutes), transform audience example assignments with Gradecraft (30minutes), field questions and provide further resources (10minutes).

Learning objectives:
• Gameful pedagogy
• Gradecraft LMS
• Implementing Gradecraft
