Merging Innovation and Sustainability through Critical Thinking: A Turnkey System for Teaching and Assessing Critical Thinking Across the Disciplines

1:15 PM - 2:30 PM

Presentation Description

95% of CEO's say that "a students ability to think critically is more important than his or her major." Yet while many educators rank critical thinking among the most important learning outcomes, few educators possess research-supported means for defining, teaching, and assessing critical thinking in their classes. In fact, critical thinking outcomes for students across the U.S. are typically lower than those of most other comparable nations.

Given those challenges to critical thinking, this workshop will help offer some solutions. Participants will:

> Understand the six fractures in education that undermine critical thinking development
> Learn a system that works across disciplines for developing critical thinking in students
> Understand how to communicate and assess critical thinking in writing and other formats

After a short presentation, participants will not only participate in grading a work (assessment) using a critical thinking instrument, they will also engage in a unique critical thinking exercise they can immediately share with their students. If time permits, participants will also be able to build a short unit in their classes for the development of critical thinking.
