Sharing Best Practices for Addressing Power, Privilege, and Oppression when Teaching Topics of Diversity & Increasing the Intersectional Lens in the Classroom to Support Student Success

2:45 PM - 4:00 PM

Presentation Description

Drawing from experiences teaching courses on topics of race, gender, and sexuality, the presenters will share case studies, best practices, challenges, and emerging issues when teaching diversity courses, with lessons that apply to any course. The session will be interactive and supportive of participants, and build participants’ skills around individualizing education.

With two presenters sharing concrete examples and strategies, and with the goal of engaging participants in meaningful discussions and Q&A, this proposal is for a 75-minute presentation. The presentation will include audience participation throughout, interaction between the presenters, whole-group discussions, pair-share discussions to give participants the chance to consider how to apply the session content to their disciplines and unique classroom environments, and time for Q&A.

Learning objectives: By the end of this session, participants should be able to:
1) Describe ways to build a respectful and supportive classroom community that encourages participation from all students and deepens opportunities for peer learning.
2) Discuss strategies for dealing with potential challenges that may come up in courses on topics of diversity.
3) Identify and pedagogical best practices from courses on topics of diversity that can be applied to courses on any subject.
