At Empire State College’s Center for Mentoring, Learning and Academic Innovation, we offer a weekly “Open Mic,” where colleagues from across the institution can, via SKYPE, come together to grapple with questions, problems, issues and concerns about their teaching practices and their work with students. Facilitated in the spirit of a support group, “Open Mic” gives everyone a chance to share and listen. We propose using this workshop to model our model with our SUNY colleagues who work on faculty development at their colleges. That is, we invite people to come to this session to raise issues about their practices as faculty developers that we can then discuss with one another. We will end this session with a discussion about the applicability of this “Open Mic” model in encouraging reflection on faculty practices and community building. Our learning objectives include: 1) introduce and demonstrate Open Mic as a strategy for faculty development; 2) share issues and questions around teaching and learning; and 3) engage in an open conversation about our common challenges and opportunities.
